The Australian Team --- Solid as Usual

The completion of the Australian Selection Series saw the Junior Women’s Team for 2001 announced. This team will represent Australia at the World Junior Championships in Penang, Malaysia.

The Australian Team is coached by NSW Squash’s Coaching Director – Dean Landy. Dean was the coach of the Australian Junior Commonwealth Games Team that won a silver medal at the inaugural Youth Games held in Edingburgh, Scotland last year. Dean brings 20 years of experience to the job and has formerly coached teams from Germany, France and Switzerland.

The Australian Junior Team was selected after a grueling three tournament series held in Brisbane over the Easter period. The Team of Kasey Brown (Taree, NSW), Lisa Camilleri (Innisfail, QLD), Georgina Davis (Alstonville, NSW) and Amelia Pittock (Dromana, VIC) was announced by the Chairwomen of the Female Selectors, Dawn Moggach. Cherelle Kelley from the ACT was named as reserve for the team.

The Australians come to Penang much less heralded than the Malaysians, Egyptians or English, or even the upstart American squad. But insiders are counting on the perennially strong Australian junior program to once again produce a strong, determined team that may pull off a few surprises.

Amelia Pittock will be playing for Australia for the second time. She first represented Australia when she was 15 and she will return with her coach (ex World and British Open Champ Vickie Cardwell) plus a large family support team. Interestingly she is not currently ranked number one in Australia but she cleaned up the number one in three last weekend in the NSW State titles.

The Squad also includes Kasey Brown who made the final in the U17 British Open last year. She was unseeded and unprepared but has learnt alot since then. She will probably be at 3 or 4 in the team and is eligible for the next champs. Georgina Davis will also be at 3 or 4 and is also eligible for the next junior Champs. Lisa Camilleri is the remaining player and will be one of the fittest girls on the circuit but it will be interesting to see how she responds to the pressure of World Squash. She is seeded 5/8 for singles.

Amelia will meet Omneya in the 1/4's if all goes to plan and she is looking forward to this as they have played before. Having her coach Vicki on site will make an enormous difference as Vicki has coached her from day 1. In the teams, Australia believes they have a very good opportunity and every effort will be made to win.

The first few rounds of the individual championship will probably set the stage for the overall performance of this year's Australian group.
