Sunday, July 15, 2001 Egyptian rushes into training after exams By Ronnie Oh PENANG: Studies have hampered Egyptian squash queen Omneya Abdel Kawi's preparations for the World Junior Women's championship but not her determination to win the title here. Although Omneya was busy preparing for her school examinations until three weeks ago, she never stopped dreaming of toppling Malaysian ace Nicol David.
"I admit my examinations, which ended
just three weeks ago, did hamper my preparations," said Omneya just before
taking to the courts at the Penang International Squash Centre for the
first time yesterday. "For four months, I had to concentrate fully on
my exams. Yet, Nicol was always at the back of my mind. Since losing to her in Kuala Lumpur last year, I have been plotting revenge. "I have also targetted this World championship as the venue to do so as it would mean fulfilling my dreams of taking over as the No. 1 in the world junior rankings." At the Milo Open in Kuala Lumpur last year, Nicol beat Omneya 3-9, 9-4, 9-2, 9-2. The determined Omneya threw herself into her preparation immediately after her exams with both personal coach Ahmed Mansoor and national coach Ahmad Taher helping her. And she feels satisfied with what she has managed to put in during the three-week period. Omneya declared yesterday that she was ready for Nicol. "It may have been a short period. But I believe I have done enough to make an impact in this world championship. I am confident my determination will help me overcome whatever shortcomings I may face," said the Egyptian ace. But Omneya will first have to quell Nicol, and the partisan crowd that will be rooting for the Malaysian at Bukit Dumbar.
