MELBOURNE, Australia — Canada clinched a berth in the playoff round Tuesday with an easy 3-0 win over Denmark in round robin play at the world team squash championships.

The fourth-seeded Canadians up their record to 2-0 and are tied for first place in their pool with ninth-seeded Finland. The Canadians and Finns meet for first place in the pool on Wednesday.

It was the Finns that put Canada out of medal contention at the last team worlds in 1999. That year Canada finished sixth after placing a best ever second in 1997.

In the match against Denmark, world number-two Jonathon Power of Toronto defeated Mikkel Korsbjerg 9-7, 9-0, 9-4; Shahier Razik of Toronto beat Michael Hansen 9-4, 9-4, 9-4 and Kelly Patrick of Edmonton won 6-9, 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 over Mads Korsbjerg.

"I’m pleased with what I’ve seen so far but it’ll be tougher now," said Canadian national team coach Gene Turk of Winnipeg. "The Finns are strong but we’ll have Jonathon this time in the line-up which wasn’t the case in 1999. The guys are taking the match very seriously. We had a practice after our match against Denmark this evening and we plan to go on the court again tomorrow morning."

The top-six seeds all won their matches including number-one Australia 3-0 over Ireland, second-seed Wales 2-1 over Germany and number-three England 2-1 over Pakistan. Round robin competition ends Wednesday.
