CANADA REMAINS UNDEFEATED AT WORLD TEAM SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS MELBOURNE, Australia—Canada aced its first big test at the world team squash championships Wednesday defeating ninth-seeded Finland 3-0 to win its pool with a perfect record and advance to the playoff round. Jonathon Power of Toronto, ranked number-two in the world, defeated Olli Tuominen 9-4, 9-6, 4-9, 9-4; Graham Ryding Toronto, making his first appearance at the championships, dumped Mika Monto 9-2, 9-7, 9-0 and Shahier Razik of Toronto beat Juha Raumolin 9-5, 2-9, 9-5, 9-5. The victory was sweet revenge for the fourth-seeded Canadians. At the 1999 worlds, with Power sidelined with an injury, the Finns beat the Canadians to put them out of medal contention. Canada finished sixth after a best ever second place finish in 1997. Canada meets 12th seeded Ireland in the round of 16 on Thursday. The Irish finished second in pool A at 2-1. There was a big upset on Wednesday as South Africa, seeded 11th, defeated number-two Wales 2-1 to win pool B. In pool F, three teams finished a 2-1 and Malaysia was ranked first followed by Scotland and the Netherlands. All three squads are headed to the playoff round. The other pools went as expected with number-one, Australia, number-three England, and number-six Egypt all finishing the round robin with perfect 3-0 marks.
