Price wins after Dramatic Match with Ricketts

Paul PriceSUNDAY, OCTOBER 21 Paul Price warmed up for the world team championships when he defeated fellow-Australian Anthony Ricketts in a thrilling five set final of the WSF World Challenge at the Sports and Aquatics Centre in Melbourne. Price, the number two seed, looked down and out when he lost the fourth game to love, and there was a suspicion that he had possibly incurred a recurrence of a back problem that plagued him earlier in the year. But it proved just to be a minor scare, and he bounced back to show marvelous form in winning 9-0, 9-10, 10-9, 0-9, 9-2 in a see-sawing 103 minute marathon.

For Price, the victory was sweet revenge for defeat in last year’s Australian Open, while it also put him in perfect heart as he looked forward to joining his Australian team mates for the start of tomorrow's world team championship.

Along with David Palmer, Stewart Boswell and John Williams, the home side are firm favourites to win the title for a record seventh time. "It's great to win the individual title, and now I want to add the team title for Australia, especially here in front of my home fans," said the world no six from Melbourne.

Anthony RIcketts"Today was a great match and I always knew it was going to be hard against Anthony. I wasn't injured in the fourth game, I was just absolutely exhausted. But I managed to comeback in the fifth which was great." Ricketts, the no nine seed who had knocked out three higher ranked players on his way to the final, was disappointed. "But Paul played really well, and it's been a good week overall for me."

Results of final (seedings in brackets):
Paul Price (AUS) (2) bt Anthony Ricketts (AUS) (9) 9-0, 9-10, 10-9, 0-9, 9-2
