Desira now plays former American Champion Shabana Khan who, after a sluggish start, beat Japanese No2 Eri Tsuchida 3-9, 9-5, 9-4, 9-3. The 36th ranked Seattle-based Pro now stands between Desira and a debut place in the World Open. The main draw of the Women's World Open Championship begins this Saturday, the 13th October, at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The other two matches in the opening session
both resulted in defeats for Australians but New South Wales' Shannon McNamara
came close to causing an upset in the fourth game before losing 3-9, 9-1,
4-9, 10-9, 9-5 in 64 minutes to Scottish international Wendy Maitland. The
Scot now plays Belgium number one and former World University Champion Kim
Hannes who secured a comfortable 9-7, 9-2, 9-2 win over Heidi Mather whose
