Women's World Quarter Finals OWENS & FITZ-GERALD SET UP DREAM MELBOURNE WORLD OPEN SEMI Melbourne-born Sarah Fitz-Gerald and Carol Owens, ranked one and three, respectively, in the world, will meet in a dream semi-final clash in the Women's World Open Squash Championship after straight games victories in today's (Wednesday) quarter-finals at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Australia. Defending champion Owens, the second seed now representing New Zealand for the first time in a WISPA World Tour event, took injury time in the first game against England's 1999 world champion Cassie Campion, catching a follow through on the bridge of her nose. After a break for taping to staunch the bleeding, Owens proceeded undeterred to claim a 9-5 9-4 9-4 win in 46 minutes. "Hopefully I won't come out with two black eyes tomorrow because I'll look like I've been in a boxing match," said the now Auckland-based Owens afterwards. In the other quarter-final of the day, third seed Fitz-Gerald cruised to a 9-0 9-4 9-2 win in 26 minutes over 'veteran' English player Suzanne Horner, the seventh seed fresh from her second World Masters Over-35 title. The all-Melbourne semi-final promises to be an exciting bout between old sparring partners Owens and Fitz-Gerald - both of whom were originally coached by Jean Fitz-Gerald, mother of the current world number one who is seeking her record-equalling fourth World Open title in her hometown.
