NETHERLANDS UPSET SCOTLAND IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER

Fifth seeds Scotland, fielding their strongest squad in many years, including two players from the world top ten, fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to Netherlands in today's (Monday) opening qualifying round in the Men's World Team Squash Championship in Melbourne, Australia.

Led by world No7 John White, twice the Scottish national champion, and world No9 Martin Heath, Scotland were expected to considerably improve on their 16th place finish in the previous championships and best-ever 8th position in 1981. While Heath dismissed the Netherlands No2 Gabor Marges 9-2 9-0 9-3, Australian-born White collapsed 9-7 2-9 9-7 10-8 to fast-rising Dutch champion Tommy Berden - ranked 19 places lower in the world. In the decider, Scotland's Neil Frankland came back from 2-0 down to level the match against former full-time player Lucas Buit, but the Dutchman stemmed the fightback to win 10-8 9-7 8-10 5-9 10-8 to give the underdogs, seeded 13/18, a memorable victory.

Hosts and top seeds Australia conceded just six points in three matches in beating Hong Kong 3-0.
