Women's World Open Squash Championship, Melbourne, Australia

KEATING IS SOLE HOME WINNER ON SECOND QUALIFYING DAY

[see first day's results]
Australia's Laura Keating was the sole home winner on the second day of the first qualifying round in the Women's World Open Squash Championship in Melbourne today (Friday) when she overcame compatriot Sally Hunt 9-2 9-5 9-2 in a 25-minute match of hard-fought rallies. Hunt is returning to the international circuit after being plagued by injury and just lacked the edge to cause an upset.

Karen Morrissey, the most local girl in the event - her office overlooks the show-court in the Melbourne Sports Aquatic Court - couldn't quite overcome a trapped nerve in her neck, or her Egyptian opponent, to win her opening qualifying match. Eman El Amir, a member of Egypt's women's world junior championship team two years ago, and now ranked 47 in the world, edged home 9-4 9-7 6-9 5-9 9-5 in sixty-five minutes to book a place against New Zealander Lara Petera in the final qualifying round.

Auckland-based Petera took exactly an hour to overcome Runa Reta of Canada 9-3 9-7 7-9 9-4 after a third game loss of concentration - while Melbournian Amelia Pittock faired less well against in-form French woman Isabelle Stoehr, losing 9-2 9-0 9-0 in twenty-three minutes. Stoehr, fresh from winning the recent Himmerland Open in Denmark, has reached number 31 in the world ranking - and in the qualifying finals meets Hong Kong number two Christina Mak, who overcame another strong local challenge when she beat 20-year-old Karen Kronemeyer 9-7 8-10 9-7 9-2 in forty-seven minutes.

Malaysian Tricia Chuah cruised to an easy 9-2 9-0 9-0 win over Slovenian number one Petra Vihar in just eleven minutes - to set up a match against Egyptian Engy Kheirallah. The 19-year-old from Cairo progressed past Papua New Guinea's Naluge Guy 9-5 9-3 9-2 in a 26-minute encounter, which featured some spectacular retrieving by both players.

Scotland's Senga Macfie managed a straightforward 9-2 9-4 9-0 victory against England's European Junior Champion Jenny Duncalf in 22 minutes.
