WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS MELBOURNE 2001 INTERNATIONAL SQUASH FESTIVAL Melbournians turned out in droves to witness the finals of the World Masters Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre today. Former World No 1, Australian Sportswoman of the Year and inductee to the Australian Hall of Fame, forty-six year old Vicki Cardwell defeated Julie Field from the UK convincingly in three games. Ranked number one in the women's 45 - 49 Open Category, Vicki forced third seed Julie's front game to the back of the court with a relatively error free performance over twenty-two minutes finishing with 9/1 9/2 9/0 score. President of the Australian Squash Masters Association and defending champion in the Mens 55 - 59 category, Peter Wright was knocked out by tournament third seed Richard Purser from New Zealand. An unexpected finalist after being defeated in the Aus / NZ series by Max Samblede, Richard demonstrated outstanding form and was too good on the day for Peter winning 9/2 9/3 9/3. Former touring professional from Egypt Ahmed Safwat, defeated seventh seed New Zealand's Trevor Colyer in a three-nil victory in the Mens 50 - 54 Open. Safwat won in 9/5 10/8 9/0 to retain the title he had won two years ago in Sheffield, England. In a spirited Australian encounter, Mary Sceney defeated Sue Baker to take the Womens 40-44 Open in 9/2 9/7 9/5. Mary is well known across the circuit, after representing Ireland at number one position for over 6 years. Mary beat the number one seed, Australia's Jo Morgan in the semi-finals. In the Womens 50 - 54 Open, Australian and Tournament number one seed Sue Volzke defeated surprise finalist, Ann Manley from the UK in a tight match. After four match points, Volzke could have called a let to receive a stroke to secure the match, but instead fought on only to defeat Ann moments later. Other Australians that enjoyed victory include Joyce Barnett (W/O 60 - 64), Fred Green (Mens 75 + Open) & Les Kewin - the oldest competitor in the competition who defeated 78-year old Otto Hart from France in a demanding three game win. The Mens 70 - 74 Open proved to be a tight contest between the top two seeds, with Peter Farenheim (RSA) defeating Maxwell Smyth (Aus). In 25 minutes, the Australian failed to dent the defences of the number one seed. Victory to Farenheim - 9/6 6/9 9/3 9/1. In the Mens 35 - 39 Open, number one seed Craig van der Wath (RSA) defeated Peter Hill (Sing). Craig went in as favourite, and was leading when Hill suffered a foot cramp in the third game, and although he returned after treatment he lost his 5/0 game lead to Craig who won 9/5 9/1 9/5 in 35 minutes. The final match for the day was the surprise victory of the Mens 45 - 49 Open, where number three seed Tom Spark (AUS) defeated number 1 seed, Madgi Saad (EGYPT) a top ten world ranked professional in the 80s 9/2 9/3 9/6. |
