Womens Draw

QUALIFYING ROUNDS FOR WOMEN'S WORLD OPEN COMPLETED - EIGHT INTO MAIN DRAW.

The eight positions available for qualifiers in the main draw of the Women's World Open Squash Championship were filled today following the completion of Qualification Rounds for the event. The Draw is now completed and the scene is set for the first round of the prestigious $150 000 tournament. which gets under way on Sunday the 14th of October at 12 noon.

The eight players who have won a place in the main event are: Kim Hannes (Belgium) Shabana Khan (USA) Lara Petra (NZ) Isabella Stoehr (France) Senga Macfie (Scotland) Sharon Wee (Malaysia) Rebecca Chiu (Hong Kong) Engy Kheirallah (Egypt)

The final round of Women's World Open qualifying saw the elimination of the remaining two Australian entries, but in the case of nineteen-year-old Melbournian Dianne Disera it was only by a whisker. Her opponent from Seattle USA, Shabana Kann squandered an 8-3 lead in the fourth but then saved Desira's match ball to take that game 10-9 to square the match and eventually win the fifth 9-7.

The other Australian to fall was representative Laura Keating who went out in straight games to experienced Scottish International Senga McFee. Scottish player Wendy Maitland who had saved five match balls yesterday before winning this time failed to convert one in the fourth against Belgium number one Kim Hannes and fell away in the fifth.

The other Belgium in the draw was not so fortunate as Hannes, being eliminated by Hong Kong number one Rebecca Chu despite running the twenty-two year old close in the third game. Meanwhile Chu's country-woman Christina Mac didn't fare so well, losing in three games in three games in 23 minutes to French Champion Isabelle Ster, a player who is likely to be a danger to any opponent in the main draw.

In the other games, Engy Kheirallah from Egypt was victorious over Trisha Chuan from Malaysia in straight games, and Sharon Wee from Malaysia beat Dominique Lloyd-Walter from England in 37 minutes. These eight players now fill the vacant spaces in the main draw, and will all play tomorrow in the first round.

Shabana Kann, from the USA will now play the number thirteen seed, Pamela Nimmo from Scotland. Scottish International Senga McFee is set to play the number six seed Stephanie Brind, from England. Kim Hannes, from Belgium, will play Australian and number three seed Carol Owens. Hong Kong's number one player Rebecca Chiu will take on the number eight seed, Australian Rachael Grinham. The last qualifier, French Champion Isabelle Stoehr, will challenge the number one seed and number one player in the world, Australian Champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald. Scotland's Senga Macfie will play the number six seed Stephanie Brind, from England. Rebecca Chu will take on Rebecca Macree, the number ten seed from England.
