Brian Ernst’s bid for a second consecutive Buys U19 Canadian
junior squash championship fell by the wayside as he ran up against a
Robin Clarke. Clarke from Ottawa mowed through the competition winning
the final in straight games (9-3, 9-2, 9-4) and not dropping a single
game the entire event.
The 18yr old Clarke, who plans to turn pro this fall,
told Squash Canada "I made sure this year I was prepared for this
tournament. For the last month my sole focus has been on winning this
tournament and I played really well especially in the final. It was a
lot tougher than the score indicated."
Calgary’s Michael Auer finished third and despite not
grabbing top honors was pleased with his result. He said "I’m satisfied,
I didn’t play spectacularly but my goal was just to get to the semis,
so I was guaranteed a top spot. I didn’t lose to anyone ranked below me,
so it looks good to make the world team."
The top four boys and girls will
be selected for the Canadian junior squad which will compete in the Junior
World Championships this August.
In the girls
U19 final Victoria B.C. native Jennifer Blumberg required 4
games to dispatch Lauren Polonich. (9-1, 9-5, 6-9, 9-3) Following in the
footsteps of so many before her the 19yr old Blumberg will now head
south of the border and make Harvard University her new squash base. "I
was feeling some pressure to get the win this year" she said. "I
good final and my game really came together."
