With
Sandy Tierney, the UClub’s top amateur
unable to play due to injury, the 2006 University Club Pro-Am
was thrown wide open with several pairings being well placed
with a shot at the title.

This ‘Star Format’ tournament climaxed
yesterday morning with a titanic struggle between the UClub’s
Jamie Fagan and James Hewitt versus Tom Poor (also UClub) and
Tyler Millard.

Fagan and Hewitt finally emerged the victors in the
fifth game, making amends for narrowly losing a closely contested
fourth, 15-14.

The tournament format certainly made both pros Hewitt
and Millard work hard (a pro draw pairing in their own right),
playing a total of 6 matches over the long weekend.
Hewitt is now the only Pro to have won the event more than
once, a feat he achieved with Jessie Chai, back in 2001.

The tournament saw almost every match go the full 5 game distance.

The
power-hitting of doubles rookie Nadeem Osman, the ‘big
point’ play Matthew Kozol, the momentum play of Aussie
Pro Scott Butcher and the vintage attire sported by Steve Wolfe,
all contributed to making this once again a highly entertaining
event that has now completed it’s eighth consecutive
year.

Attention will now return to the Pro Final between third seeds
Mike Pirnak(Can) and Clive Leach(Eng) versus top seeds Ben
Gould(Aus) and Preston Quick(USA).

The 7pm final follows the
inaugural Junior division final scheduled at 6pm.

Reports to follow on Squashtalk on both matches.
