LEILANI JOYCE ANXIOUS FOR ACTION in Aberdeen, is watching another match from high in the stands. "It gets pretty boring waiting around for the matches," she confides. "...boring in a negative way. And since I have to travel here all the way from New Zealand, I had to arrive in this case on Thursday for matches which didn't start until Monday, so by the time the tournament start, I am fighting to keep my energy focused."
On the court Joyce has phenomenal court coverage and athletic potential. Off court, she is jovial and looking for fun. Joyce is matter-of-fact about the realities of competing in a game where the bulk of the tournaments are in Europe and North America and she is constantly travelling from New Zealand. "No I never suffer from jet-lag" she said. "I am a frequent traveler on the airlines. Whereas many of the top British players are supported through UK Lottery Grant system."
She is also traveling basically without a coach or other New Zealand players. But she clearly thrives with the competition and has high aspirations. She just doesn't like all the waiting time. She has 8 hours to kill before her quarter-final match with Stephanie Brind, and she can't wait.
