Tom Page - Jahangir remembers.
"Tom Page was a great competitor."
"I always had a lot of respect for Tom Page and he always had a lot of respect for me on the court." This is how Jahangir Khan remembered Tom Page. Above all, Jahangir expressed his profound sadness at Tom Page's passing, and his heartfelt respect for one of his toughest opponents.
SquashTalk reached Jahangir in London, where he was attending the British Open. He spoke with us by phone, and his sincerity in his warm feelings for Tom Page, clearly came through the phone. "Tom was a very clean player and fast. There was never any trouble with Tom on court. I enjoyed competing against him. It was totally squash. He could fool me on where his shot was going to go anytime. He always pushed me hard. He was usually ahead, beating me 2-0 when we played. And I knew he wasn't going to get tired"
These words of great respect came from Jahangir Khan on hearing the sad news of Tom Page's death. Jahangir Khan, who won the British Open 10 times and has played countless matches and won countless honors, was touched by the passing of an opponent that he very plainly enjoyed doing battle with.
Living half-a-world away, Jahangir, like many in North America, was affected by Tom Page's passing. Jahangir reflected on his matches against Tom Page.
For Jahangir, the mutual respect was the most important thing.... And the greatest honor he could pay to his fellow squash player.
