Aussie Kneipp Upsets Brit Walker

England's unseeded Nick Taylor recorded one of his most impressive wins in recent times when he fought back from 2-0 down to defeat Scotland's Martin Heath, the 14th seed, 12-15, 10-15, 15-3, 15-11, 15-4 in a marathon 82-minute battle to reach the second round of the $120,000 PSA Masters Squash Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Manchester-based Taylor, a former world No14 now languishing at 33 in the PSA rankings, next meets France's 5th seed Thierry Lincou, who beat Egyptian Omar Elborolossy 15-3 15-13 15-8 in 53 minutes. Fresh from his British Open triumph earlier this month, England's top seed Peter Nicol despatched South African Rodney Durbach 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 in 40 minutes to earn a second round encounter with Australia's Joseph Kneipp, who took just a minute longer to upset Nicol's compatriot and fellow left-hander Chris Walker, the 11th seed, 15-12, 15-12, 15-8. “It is difficult to carry the same form into a second successive event [after the British Open] but this is what I would be hoping for,” said Nicol

Second seed David Palmer was also in action on the second day of first round play. The world No2 defeated fellow Australian Anthony Ricketts 10-15, 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 in 62 minutes and now meets England's tenth seed Mark Chaloner. Palmer told the local press: “I didn’t want to go too fast in the match so I decided to lose the first game. The ball got colder in the second and slowed down and I started playing my natural game,”

In the first day of the WISPA Women's World Grand Prix Finals, Australia's double British Open champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald cruised through her first qualifying round, beating event newcomer Stephanie Brind, the world No6 from England, 9-0 9-4 9-1 in 25 minutes.
