Nicol and Power Set up Qatar Clash Canada's world No3 Jonathon Power will be seeking his third successive win this year over long-time rival Peter Nicol, the world No1 from England, when the pair meet in the semi-finals of the $120,000 PSA Masters Squash Championship in Doha, Qatar. Top seed Nicol, the former Scot, defeated Egypt's unseeded Karim Darwish 15-7 15-5 17-14 in a 43-minute quarter-final, while Power, the fourth seed, took three minutes more to overcome another unseeded Egyptian Amr Shabana 15-9, 15-13, 15-6.
In the second game, at 12-all, Shabana’s backhand found the tin surrendering a key point which would have changed the complexion of the match. Power , happy to escape three straight said, “He is a very talented player and dangerous. He played well today and the second game was touch-and-go for me.” The Power/Nicol Qatar clash will be the pair's 29th, with the Englishman currently holding a 15-13 lead. Nicol looks forward to the matchup: “I have played him around 30 times and just lead the head-to-heads. Power loves this court and has traditionally done well here. While I have had to change my style to adjust to this court. It will be a hard match.” The other semi-final will be an all-Australian encounter between second seed David Palmer, from Lithgow, and Canberra-born sixth seed Stewart Boswell. World No2 Palmer was taken the full distance by Frenchman Thierry Lincou, the fifth seed, before triumphing 13-15 15-12 15-13 12-15 15-11 in 115 minutes - the longest battle of the event to date. Boswell maintained his winning PSA Tour sequence over English rival Lee Beachill with a 15-5 14-17 15-9 15-6 victory in 70 minutes over the British National champion from Yorkshire. In the final qualifying round of the WISPA Women's World Grand Prix Finals, top seeds Sarah Fitz-Gerald and Carol Owens maintained their unbeaten runs in the event with straight games wins over England's Suzanne Horner and Cassie Campion, respectively.
