Power Takes Second Masters in a Row

DOHA, Qatar- Jonathon Power of Montreal successfully defended his title Sunday at the $100,000 (U.S.) Professional Squash Association’s Masters tournament with a 15-10, 15-7, 8-15, 15-13 victory over Stewart Boswell of Australia in the final.

"I played really well in the first two games and started thinking about the win a little bit too early," said the fourth-seeded Power. "I hadn’t faced Stewart in a couple of years but he had been playing very well and I just tried to stick to my game plan."

Boswell, the sixth seed, feels he took another big step towards the top of the squash world with his performance which included an upset of world number-two David Palmer of Australia in the semifinal.

The 27-year-old Power has now won three of the four major tournaments so far this year. He beat world number-one Peter Nicol of England to win both the Tournament of Champions in February and the Pakistan Open last month. He also beat Nicol here in Saturday’s semifinal. Power was a semifinalist at the British Open two weeks ago. Power, who pockets $21,600 for his victory Sunday, says staying away from injuries is the key to his success this season after being on mend for most of 2001.

"It was a tough year last year," he said. "But I worked hard to get my body back in shape. It’s pretty pleasing to get immediate success and get back to where I was before."

Power departs Monday for Calgary where he’ll look to defend his title at the Canadian championships May 1-4 at the Glencoe Club
