Power Shines while Nicol and Palmer Fade

Jonathon Power, Peter Nicol and David Palmer are undeniably the "Big Three" on the men's tour in 2002. Only one, Mr. Power, remains in the Qatar Masters draw tonight.

The crafty and charismatic Power has now beaten Peter Nicol three straight time, each time when it has counted. Nicol, who claimed a leg injury when losing to Power in New York has no such claims to hide behind today. Nicol, who claims to work harder than Power, finds himself bested by a mature, impressive player who has all the shots, all the charisma, and is in great condition.

Power, who can become at times a caricature of himself on court, turns on and off the shenanagins at will and while he appears interested in ending points quickly, he is totally capable of playing the long point when necessary. He knows what game to play against arch-rival Nicol. He keeps Nicol on the run until even the peerless Nicol can't do it any more. It's a bonus when his spin is working to perfection, and his drops find the nick.

PALMER, INVISIBLE
Meanwhile, David Palmer, who has a rough and tumble game that can give Power fits, has lost a golden opportunity to challenge Power. Now it's his up and coming Australian compatriot Stewart Boswell who gets the chance. Boswell had a big chance at the YMG in Toronto against Nicol in the finals - but fell short. Now he gets his second major chance at a "Major" finals. Our money says that Power is too motivated and too focused right now to give Boswell the opening. But the easy-going unflappable Boswell does have just the right temperament to roll with Power's punches and stick it out to the end of the fifth.

But what about Mr. Palmer? A close examination of his recent results show that he's not sustaining the kind of major event results befitting a pretender to the #1 position. Palmer's got the confidence, the court presence, and the game to be a #1. But at the present he's not getting the results. With Price in a slump at the moment, Boswell has the opening to take the Australian limelight.

CAMPION, FINALLY
Cassie Campion, who was probably shocked awake by her collapse against Tania Bailey at the British Open last week, came back very strong today in her semi final match against Sarah Fitz-Gerald. Fitz-Gerald, who's been totally tearing every woman on tour apart, couldn't shake an impressive performance by Cassie Campion. Any player who can take Sarah Fitz-Gerald to five games in 2002 is playing absolutely top world class squash. Congratulations Cassie, on your return to form!
