Shahid Zaman Scores Breakthrough win over Paul Price

by Ron Beck, SquashTalk, © 2001

Shahid Zaman, called out by Jahangir Khan as one of the young Pakistani pros with strong world-stage potential, scored the best win of his career in the first round of the Qatar Classic, at Doha Qatar on Wednesday.

Zaman, who has had good results in tournaments in Pakistan, Malaysia, and other regional contests, made his first strong showing in a major PSA event. Price, whose recent mediocre results have been excused by observers on the grounds of a nagging back injury, couldn't use any such excuse in his loss today. Price took the first game easily, and after falling behind 2-1 played a strong game four winning that game. But Zaman showed superior fitness and superior creativity in taking the match in five games.

Perhaps more significantly, Zaman had the legendary (and last month's Squashtalk Player of the month) Jahangir Khan in his corner for the match. Jahangir's support is a positive signal from supporters of Pakistani squash. In the past several years Pakistani players on the PSA tour have been largely left to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, while Zaman was getting coaching and support from Jahangir, Price was self destructing, as he distracted himself with periods of discussion with the referee.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Mohammed Abbas ambushed Malaysian Ong Beng Hee in a tense five game battle, won finally by Abbas in over an hour and a half. Abbas and Zaman now face each other in round two.

Another key players to fall in the first day's play was Egyptian Kareem Darwish, while former world #2 Peter Marshall was unable to mount a serious challenge to world #1 David Palmer
