Lot of Interest in Women's Day One

by Sarah Fitz-Gerald, Oct 5, 2001 Special to SquashTalk, © 2001

Leilani Joyce bt Rebecca Macree 9-2, 9-4, 9-6, 27 minutes --- Lani was too strong for the improving Macree who does amazing well even though deaf. Lani seemed confident in her self and her game.

Suzanne Horner bt Pam Nimmo. 9-5, 9-2, 9-7 --- Pam will be happy with her improved performance over recent months as she sufferd from Deep Vein Thrombosis. Pam struggled mentlly as well as physcially since returning to the tour, and her play today will be for her a very good sign for better results in the future.

Cassie Campion bt Linda Charman Smith 9/7 3/9 9/3 9/4 --- Former world No 1 Cassie Campion was most pleased with her win over world no 4 Linda Charman-Smith. Today was Linda's first match since playing me in a promotional exhibiton match in Kenya last June.

Linda obviously needs some match play before feeling fully fit while Cassie is getting stronger every day since surgery last year---she took advantage of Linda's lack of competitive play.

Vanessa Atkingson bt Senga Macfie 9/2 4/9 9/3 --- The talented Vanessa Atkinson proved too strong for Scotland's Senfga Macfee except for an unexplained lapse in the 2nd game. Senga is an extememly talented player who struggles to channel her ability and reach the level which is capable.

Stephanie Brind bt Natalie Grinham 4/9 9/7 10/8 9/7 --- Natalie Grinham took a game from Stepahanie Brind of Engalnd before surcummbing to the experience and pressure Brind was able to apply whenever the scores got close.

Rachael Grinham bt Vicky Botwright 3-2 9/7 in the 5th --- Rachael led 2-0 before Vicky came back hard and aggressive. Rachael dug deep and with the support of her younger sisiter Natalie she pulled out all stops to win the 5th 9/7

Sarah Fitz-Gerald bt Maha Zein 9/0 9/0 9/2 --- Our match was on the all glass court which suited my style of play much more than Maha's. I led 9/0,9/0 2-0 (I think) before Maha succeded to win her first and well deserved point.

I was able to apply pressure and keep Maha in the back of the court befoer taking her short and playing winners. I will play Rachael tomorrwo which Ilook forard to as she played well against me in Egypt at the Grand Prix finals last March.
