The Fate of the Losers

by Chris Walker, Oct 4 2001 Special to SquashTalk, © 2001

Well we are into the last 16 now and everyone that won during the first round (played over 2 days) is preparing for the opportunity of winning tomorrow and getting into the quarter-finals.

Most of the first round losers are preparing for a week in Qatar training, sunning and waiting for the next event in Melbourne. Most will stay here because the hotel is paid for until the end of the tournament; earning their keep by taking part in promotional events, perhaps getting on court with local juniors, at the organisers discretion.

The toughest route is that of the qualifiers who lost. Some will fly home and others will be staying in Qatar or heading for Melbourne on an expensive trip, waiting for the start of the next event while paying for their living costs all the while. For those who do stay, the hotel has a beach volleyball net and every year I have come here there has been a volleyball game of about 10 a side - referees and pressmen join in hoping to get a revenge spike in to one of the players heads! The referees always referee, and there are some TERRIBLE decisions on line calls. I am convinced they don't actually know the rules of volleyball either!!

Some of the guys will venture on to the tennis courts where the Qatar Open Tennis Championships are played and for those who don't the hotel offers water sports and a tenpin bowling alley to while a way the hours too. If you're still in the event the last place you want to be for more than a few minutes is outside. It is always around 45 degrees so the earlier you lose the better your tan!

Several of the players opt to bring their girlfriends/wives here because it's like a holiday if you are hanging around the pool area. The girlfriends/wives get to top up their tans and see what a hard life it is for their travelling squash player boyfriends/husbands! but rest assured, it's not all work and no play for the boys!
