Fifteen Years On Tour!

by Chris Walker, Oct 7 2001 Special to SquashTalk, © 2001

As we wind up proceedings here in Qatar as the players all start to leave for their next destinations, it's a great time to reflect on how the circuit has developed over the 15 years I have been on it.

You heard me correct....... '15 years!'.

Well, the courts of the world have improved significantly, which is a credit to all the countries supporting squash and investing in it's future. We used to have to play on wooden floors built on concrete which was hard on the body, and in places like Singapore and Malaysia we had to go through the pain of playing on un-aircondioned courts.

Many of the fittest players on the circuit then just couldn't function with the heat and humidity of those courts. It always seemed a little unfair to me but it certainly forced you to try and develop your game to conserve energy! Now thankfully all the events we play in are on sprung floors and fully air-conditioned (apart from the odd match in Pakistan where the airconditioning faulters once in a while).

The biggest single thing that has made the travelling away from home and keeping in touch with friends and family easily, is the internet. I even caught the great Jahangir Khan on internet to his fans around the world while I was touring the Qatar squash offices and got a picture just to prove it!

Mobile phones are now abundant too, with most of the players using them to send text messages to keep in touch. So, convenience wise, the world is becoming smaller and the time between matches is getting easier to fill. Emailing, texting and of course, because our tour goes through Hong Kong, most of us pick up DVD and CD Video players to listen to music Cd's and watch films as well.

SO don't be under any illusion that we just lock ourselves in the hotel room and watch the ceiling! Some even reach for a book if they have time! see you soon in squash Chris Walker
