Power Wierdly Still at #3 Ranking
WORLD SQUASH NEWS Nicol Extends World Ranking Lead - But Power Stays At No3
In the oddest yet permutation of the world ranking algorithm, England's world champion Peter Nicol has extended his lead at the top of the new May Dunlop PSA Men's World Rankings, despite losing to Jonathon Power in both New York's Tournament of Champions and Qatar's Masters.
Canada's Jonathon Power who has won three of the five events held in 2002 remains at No3 behind Australia's world No2 David Palmer who has not won any. Furthermore, with the absence of any top tier events until Hong Kong in August, the rankings will not move significantly in the interim.
Nicol, 29, from London, celebrates his fifth consecutive month as world No 1 after winning his second British Open title early last month.
However, the former Scot lost for the third successive time this year to arch rival Jonathon Power in last week's semi-finals of the PSA Masters in Qatar. The Canadian went on to win the richest PSA Tour title this year - and claim his third trophy in 2002.
Australia's Stewart Boswell rises to a career-high No4 in the new list. The 23-year-old from Canberra celebrated his first appearance in a PSA Super Series final when he reached the PSA Masters climax after scoring his first ever win over compatriot David Palmer in the semi-finals.
England's Chris Walker - enjoying a new lease of life on the men's international circuit despite being the oldest player at 34 - consolidated his position as the highest-ranked Englishman by moving up to 7 after reaching the quarter-finals of the British Open. Compatriot Lee Beachill, the British national champion for the second year, records a best-ever No9 ranking after quarter-finals berths in both the British Open and PSA Masters. Amr Shabana becomes the highest-ranked Egyptian for the first time after marking his top twenty debut with a seven-place jump to 18. The 22-year-old from Cairo reached the last eight of the PSA Masters unseeded.
