World Champion Peter Nicol, making his first appearance in his native Scotland since defecting to England, enjoyed both a warm reception and a comfortable win in the Scottish Open in Perth.

Nicol, who controversially switched nationality to benefit from England’s superior back-up support for elite athletes, needed just 47 minutes to beat Egypt’s Omar Elborolossy 15-12 15-13 15-10.

Peter Nicol"I’m delighted to be back in Scotland, and I hope the controversy is in the past," claimed Nicol. "Switching to play for England was the most difficult thing I’ve had to do in my career, but I think that people understand why I did it.

"Now I want it put in the past. I could have hidden, but I’ve come here this week to support the Scottish Open. It’s a great tournament and deserves support."

Against, Elborolossy, Nicol conceded that everything had gone his way, with three crucial decisions going his way in all three games. Elborolossy had a ball called out to go game point down in the first, was given a penalty point at 10-all in the second and again had a ball that he was certain was inside the line deemed otherwise by the official at 10-all in the third.

"I was fortunate to get through 3-0," said Nicol, who won the Super Series Final for a third successive time in London last week. "But I also felt that I had an extra gear if necessary."

Australian-born John White, the Scottish Champion, stayed on course for what would be an intriguing clash with Nicol in the semi-finals with a 15-12 15-12 15-13 win over English qualifier, Mark Cairns. The other two matches also went with the form book. Paul Johnson (England) beat John Williams (Australia) 15-13 15-10 15-9 and Mark Chaloner (England) beat Nick Taylor (England) 15-11 15-3 15-6
