Ahmed BaradaAhmed Barada's much awaited comeback after eight months out of the sport did not even last one game in the Scottish Open squash Championships at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth.

The Egyptian no 8 seed has been out of action since last October's Canadian Open, during which one of Egypt's most eligible bachelors has, apparently, fallen in love, spent time doing 'normal' things and then had a proposed return put back by injury.

But leading 11-10 after just 15 minutes in the opener against Welshman Alex Gough, a groin injury led to Barada calling for a trainer and, three minutes later, he conceded the match. Having just flown into Scotland at 10am, he was on his way out less than 12 hours later.

"I'm bitterly disappointed. I really saw this week as my way back," said Barada after departing the courts to leave Gough as a surprised easy winner. "I felt something go early on and just couldn't continue. But I know I want to come back and I will go home to Egypt for treatment and my next tournament will be the Al Ahram in August."

Gough added: "I'm pleased to go through, although it's not the way you would want it. But I feel my game is in good shape at the moment and I'm looking forward to the rest of the Championship."

Another shock result came in the first match, with Australian qualifier, Stewart Boswell, cruising through against Malaysia's talented youngster, Ong Beng Hee.

Beng Hee, who trains with Peter Nicol and had the world no 2 in his corner between games, seemed totally out of sorts against Boswell, a former Scottish Junior Open Champion. The first game was close, but two and three were surprisingly one-sided. Boswell won 15-9 15-5 15-7.

Martin Heath and Joseph Kneipp at 2001 Irish OpenBoswell now meets Martin Heath, who delighted the home crowd by going through to the quarter-finals with a battling win over another Australian qualifier, Joe Kneipp. Kneipp had beaten the Scot in last year's British Open, and he raised hopes of a repeat against the no 4 seed by taking the first game.

But Heath, who had been playing golf when he should have been at Wednesday's opening ceremony, allocated less than an hour to the squash court when he fought back to win 7-15 15-6 15-10 15-6.

"Someone recently wrote that I had reached my peak, but I still feel I've can get better and I'm very happy with the way my game is coming together just now," said 28-year-old Heath.

"I opened these courts with my brother a couple of years ago so I have good memories of Perth. Hopefully, I can go all the way to the final."

Paul Price and Derek Ryan at the 2001 Irish OpenAustralian Paul Price, the No. 2 seed, claimed his place in the last eight, and a match against Gough, with a four game encounter against Ireland's Derek Ryan. In the longest match of the evening, lasting 73 minutes, the Aussie won 15-8 15-9 11-15 17-16.
