BARADA BAILS OUT IN PERTH OPENER
The long-awaited return to the PSA Tour by Egypt's Ahmed Barada ended after just 15 minutes when the former world No3 surrendered to his Welsh opponent Alex Gough in the first round of the $50,000 Scottish Open Squash Championship in Perth. The 8th seed was 11-10 ahead when he was forced to retire with a groin injury.

"I am really disappointed - I am so glad to be back but I am in badly in need of match practice," said the Egyptian superstar who has not been seen in competitive action since reaching the semi-finals of the Capital Classic in Toronto last November. Barada told reporters that he felt his groin go early in the match, but played on as long as he could. His next appearance on the PSA Tour will be at the Al-Ahram International in his hometown Cairo in September.

Gough, the briefly-tested world No13 based in Nottingham, now meets Australia's second seed Paul Price, who need 73 minutes to overhaul Irish champion Derek Ryan 15-8 15-9 11-15 17-16, thus reversing the result of their last meeting in the Irish Open in May.

The evening's major upset came when Malaysian squash star Ong Beng Hee, the 5th seed, crashed out of the tournament in straight games, beaten by Australia's unseeded Stewart Boswell 15-9 15-5 15-7. The 22-year-old world No15 from Canberra was delighted with his 49-minute win over his opponent ranked six places above him in the world, particularly as Ong Beng Hee was being advised between games by fellow London Connaught Club team-mate Peter Nicol, the Scottish-born world champion.

Boswell, who has his sights on October's World Team Championships and the WSF Individual World Championships in Melbourne in his home country, now faces Scotland's 4th seed Martin Heath, who beat Australian qualifier Joseph Kneipp 7-15 15-6 15-10 15-6 in 54 minutes.
