NICOL OFF TO A FLYING START WHILE PALMER SUFFERS UNEXPECTED DEFEAT

England’s world number one, Peter Nicol, started his defence of the Bank of Scotland Investment Service Super Series Squash Finals with a comprehensive victory over Frenchman Thierry Lincou at Broadgate Arena last night, whilst top seed David Palmer from Australia suffered a shock defeat to the number seven seed, England’s Mark Chaloner, in the opening match.

Nicol cruised to a three game victory (15-7, 15-13, 15-5) in just 46 minutes over Lincou who makes his debut in this tournament. “I’m feeling good, playing well and I love the heat on court,” said Nicol sending out a warning message to all his rivals here in London.

Nicol’s main contender Palmer, however, lost in four games in a hot and physical match to England’s Mark Chaloner in the Harrow Group that lasted 1 hour 44 minutes and contained no fewer than 69 refereeing decisions.

Palmer now has to win both his remaining matches in order to be sure of reaching the Semi-Finals on Thursday. In the other Group matches, Scotland’s John White defeated Malaysia’s Ong Beng Hee in four games in the Harrow Group, whilst Australia’s Stewart Boswell overcame England’s Chris Walker in three games in the Fleet Group.

Walker is the late replacement for Canadian Jonathon Power and showed his fatigue after an overnight flight from America. He replaced the Canadian former world number one who withdrew on Sunday with a pulled glutius minimus.
