About Video Formats

NTSC? PAL?

BRIEF NOTE ON THE VIDEO AND DVD FORMATS

Most videos available through SquashTalk are offered in both NTSC and PAL formats. For those confused by the terminology (especially Americans) here is some clarification:

WHAT IS NTSC?.

  • NTSC is the "USA standard" video format. Americans will also know it as "VHS". The american NTSC format is also commonly used in video players in Japan, Korea, Singapore and some other locations.
  • PAL is the "European standard" video format. PAL is generally the format required for video players sold in the UK and Europe.

You may also have a "multiplayer" video player system. These players will play both formats as well as several other formats.

Most of the videos sold on the site are "native NTSC" recordings. So if you have a multiplayer system, we suggest you order an NTSC tape.

For videotapes (i.e. VHS tapes) you must have the correct format to play the tape in your country/player.

For DVD disks: DVD players on a computer should be "worldwide" - they should play both NTSC and PAL disks. In that case, please order NTSC as that is the native format for most SquashTalk supplied DVDs.

For other players, please read the instruction on your DVD player to check which format you need. Some of our newer DVDs are created to play on all players, but it still better to request the correct format.
