closes the gap

JOYCE CELEBRATES SIXTH MONTH AS WORLD No1
New Zealand’s Leilani Joyce begins her sixth month as the world’s No1
squash player in the new April women’s world rankings, announced today
(3rd April) by the Women’s International Squash Players’ Association (WISPA).

The 26-year-old British Open champion
from Hamilton maintains her lead – despite losing in straight games to
Australia’s Sarah Fitz-Gerald in last month’s final of the Munich Open.
The three-times former world champion from Melbourne has closed the gap
on Joyce, but remains at No3, behind compatriot Carol Owens, the New Zealand-based
world champion, at No2.

A new name appears in fourth place,
heading a group of four English players: newly-married Linda Charman-Smith
(formerly simply ‘Charman’) is followed by Natalie Grainger at 5; Tania
Bailey at 6; and Suzanne Horner at 7.

Two players rise to career-high top
thirty rankings – Egypt’s 15-year-old Omneya Abdel Kawy moves to 21, and
Ireland’s Madeline Perry makes her top 30 debut at 29.
