The remarkable squash career of Australia’s legendary Heather McKay has been
recognised by the Women’s International Squash Players’ Association by her
induction as a founder member of the WISPA Hall of Fame.

The ceremony took place at the Women’s World Open in Seattle. Mrs McKay
travelled from Australia to accept the award from compatriot Michelle Martin,
accompanied by WISPA Chairman Linda Charman and fellow board member Natalie
Grainger.

Heather McKay was a colossus of the sport in the 60s and 70s, winning an
awesome sixteen British Open titles from 1962 to 1977 and remaining
undefeated for a total of seventeen years before retiring.

The WISPA Hall of Fame has been established on the eve of the new millennium
to recognise the sport’s most distinguished women players. The founding
‘Hall of Fame’ trio comprises Heather McKay; England’s late Janet Shardlow,
winner of ten consecutive British Open championships from 1950; and New
Zealand’s Dame Susan Devoy, also a ten-times British Open winner who ruled
women’s squash from the mid-eighties into the early nineties.

Linda Charman said: “We were thrilled that Heather McKay, who was such a
squash hero to me, was able to accept our invitation to join us in person for
this unique opportunity to recognise the great achievements she, Susan Devoy
and the late Janet Shardlow, have made in our sport.”
