Fitz-Gerald Advances, Chiu can't stop Macree

Defending champion Fiona Geaves is one step away from her second successive final appearance after beating Egypt's Maha Zein 9-5 9-2 9-3 in the quarter-finals of the Bright Lights Women's Las Vegas Squash Open in Las Vegas, USA. It was an easy win for Fiona. The world No7 from Gloucester, the No2 seed, now faces third seed Vanessa Atkinson, the Dutch No1, who despatched Malaysia's world junior champion Nicol David 10-9 9-0 9-6.

Vanessa held a 7-2 lead in the first game with Nicol but lost her concentration and Nicol took full advantage of that lapse - Vanessa was lucky to escape the first game. . Nicol runs and retrieves well causing Vanessa to go tighter and lower than she would prefer, thus forcing errors and creating some long interesting rallies. Nicol lost focus in the second game while Vanessa maintained pressure. In the final game, Vanessa needed four attempts to win on match ball after successive errors on her drop or volley drop but she finally won with a good length on the fourth try.

My match with Senga MacFie was much better for me than my fist round as I had become accustomed to the court (20 foot wide, dodgy nicks and metal strips all over the court) I felt I found my rythum tonight and Senga played some good constructive rallies but my volleys and length and fitness proved too strong.

It was also interesting that Rebecca Macree struggled with Rebecca Chui. I meet Rebecca tomorrow

[2] Fiona Geaves (ENG) bt [6] Maha Zein (EGY) 9-5, 9-2, 9-3
