American Entrants Snuffed Out

Botwright ends Local Star's Day

Seattle Open organizers gave lower-ranked Shabana Khan the wild card into the Seattle Open main draw, doubtless figuring that sister Latasha, the highest ranked American woman pro, would have an easy time through the qualifier. But English pro Vicky Botwright scored a decisive win over Latasha Khan Tuesday.

The other American entrant, Dana Betts from Connecticut, fared no better falling to hot Aussie pro Natalie Grinham in three games, leaving Shabana the only American in the draw.

The two most interesting matchups Tuesday were "intramural" contests, with two top Egyptians, Maha Zein and Engy Kheirallah facing each other for the second time in two weeks. Zein defeated Kheirallah in the first round of last week's Las Vegas event. In Seattle, Kheirallah reversed her close loss in Las Vegas, this time edging Zein in five games. Meanwhile, two Asian standouts, Nicol David and Rebecca Chiu, who face each other each time that Malaysia faces Hong Kong, also drew each other in Seattle. David had a surprisingly tough five game contest with the Hong Kong #1.

Qualifying action concludes Wednesday.

Qualification results:
