Vanessa Atkinson gets up off the floor

Grinham, Atkinson Pace Eventful Thursday Evening

Seeds tumbled on the opening day of the fourth and final event in the May WISPA US Tour event in Seattle when only the top four seeds made it through to the second round of the Phil Smart Women's Seattle Squash Open at the Athletic Club Downtown.

Unseeded Dutch No1 Vanessa Atkinson, runner-up in last week's Las Vegas Open, maintained her form with an impressive win over England's 5th seed Stephanie Brind. It all came down to the fifth game where Brind, with matchball at 8-6 and her opponent on the floor, hit an easy-looking winner into the tin.

After a three-minute injury break, Atkinson returned to the court to level the game to 8-8, then finished two incredible rallies with backhand drop nicks to claim a 5-9 9-6 9-3 7-9 10-8 upset.

Australia's Grinham sisters had mixed first round fortunes: While 7th seed Rachael Grinham crashed out 9-3 9-5 1-9 9-3 to English qualifier Tania Bailey, runner-up in both last month's British Open and the recent San Francisco International Challenge, qualifier Natalie Grinham pipped England's in-form Natalie Grainger, the 8th seed based in the US, in five games. The Australian took a two-game lead, but Pohrer came back with a vengeance and, after levelling the match, went 5-0 up in the fifth game.

"I realised I had nothing to lose - and just went for it," said the younger Grinham after a spectacular fightback in which Pohrer failed to get another point as the Toowoomba tornado raced to her 10-8 9-3 3-9 6-9 9-5 victory.

The first day's results left all of the American entrants, including the hometown hosts, Latasha and Shabana Khan out of the action and free for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
