Charman-Smith Hits Back to Beat Bailey

England's world No6 Linda Charman-Smith avenged defeats in their last two meetings when she beat compatriot Tania Bailey in the quarter-finals of the Phil Smart Women's Seattle Squash Open at the Athletic Club Downtown in Seattle, USA.

Bailey, a qualifier fighting her way back to form after a knee injury layoff, beat the higher-ranked Charman-Smith in the Texas Open in March, then in the British Open on her way to the final last month. The 22-year-old former world junior champion took the opening game in Seattle, but was unable to sustain concentration level as the experienced Charman-Smith, from Sussex, fought back to claim a 5-9 9-5 9-1 9-1 victory and a place in the semi-finals. Fourth seed Charman-Smith will face New Zealand's No2 seed Carol Owens, who secured her second successive straight games win in the tournament when she beat the unseeded Dutch No1 Vanessa Atkinson 9-1 9-5 9-2.

Australia's unseeded Natalie Grinham carried over her confidence from the previous night's victory over 8th seed Natalie Pohrer to take a 6-2 lead in the opening game against top-seeded compatriot Sarah Fitz-Gerald.

The world No1 and four-times world champion turned her game up a notch, however, and did not allow Grinham to use her straight drops. Favourite Fitz-Gerald cruised to a 9-6 9-3 9-3 win and now meets English rival and former world champion Cassie Campion, the third seed, who despatched compatriot Rebecca Macree 9-1 9-3 9-1.

[1] Sarah Fitz-Gerald (AUS) bt [Q] Natalie Grinham (AUS) 9-6, 9-3, 9-3
