Campion second-game rally falls short

Australia's world No1 and four-times world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald is one win away from equalling compatriot Michelle Martin's record 57 WISPA World Tour title victories after beating England's Cassie Campion in the semi-finals of the Phil Smart Women's Seattle Squash Open at the Athletic Club Downtown in Seattle, USA.

Fitz-Gerald's opponent will be former fellow Melbourne-based Carol Owens, the world No2 now representing New Zealand, who crushed England's Linda Charman-Smith 9-2 9-0 9-4. The final will be the 30th WISPA World Tour meeting between the pair since May 1993.

Fitz-Gerald's victory over third seed Campion - her 46th win in a row since September last year - was not without incident. In the opening rally of the match, Sarah struck Cassie with her racket on her follow through, hitting the tips of her opponent's fingers. The world No4 from Norfolk was clearly troubled in the first game, but recovered to take the second to the wire, but Fitz-Gerald ultimately prevailed 9-3 10-8 9-1 to reach her 87th WISPA final.

RESULTS: Phil Smart Women's Seattle Squash Open, Seattle, USA

Semi-finals:
[1] Sarah Fitz-Gerald (AUS) bt [3] Cassie Campion (ENG) 9-3, 10-8, 9-1
[2] Carol Owens (NZL) bt [4] Linda Charman-Smith (ENG) 9-2, 9-0, 9-4
