Top Seeds in San Francisco Semis       <Sarah's Notebook>

Bay Club, San Francisco. Thursday May 9 2002

Top Seeds In San Francisco Semis The four top seeds have taken their anticipated places in the semi-finals of the SportKit Women's International Squash Challenge in San Francisco, USA.

Only England's fourth seed Jenny Tranfield was stretched to more than three games as unseeded Melanie Jans grabbed a close third game. But the Canadian was unable to stop Tranfield, the sport's only holder of a PhD title, ultimately claiming a 10-8 9-3 9-10 9-1 win and a place in the last four.

Tranfield will face top seed Sarah Fitz-Gerald in the pair's second US semi-final meeting in a week. The four-times world champion from Australia comfortably beat Egypt's 6th seed Maha Zein 9-2, 9-4, 9-1. The other semi-final will be an all-English affair between 2nd seed Stephanie Brind and third seed Tania Bailey in the pair's first meeting since Bailey's comeback this year after a knee injury. Brind beat South Africa's Annelize Naude 9-2 9-2 9-6, while Bailey overcame Scotland's Senga Macfie 9-4, 10-9, 9-2.

RESULTS: SportKit Women's International Squash Challenge, San Francisco, USA Quarter-finals:
[1] Sarah Fitz-Gerald (AUS) bt [6] Maha Zein (EGY) 9-2, 9-4, 9-1
[4] Jenny Tranfield (ENG) bt Melanie Jans (CAN) 10-8, 9-3, 9-10, 9-1
