The 2001 Richmond (Vancouver BC) Open - ATKINSON & TRANFIELD IN VANCOUVER FINAL

ATKINSON & TRANFIELD IN VANCOUVER FINAL
By Howard Harding, for WISPA. May 26 2001
Vanessa Atkinson, the No1 seed from the Netherlands, and Jenny Tranfield, the second seed from England, will contest the final of the Women's Richmond Squash Open in Vancouver, Canada.

Six-times Dutch national champion Atkinson dropped her first game of the tournament in beating local favourite Melanie Jans, the Canadian national champion from Toronto, 10-8, 9-2, 6-9, 9-5.

The other semi-final was a much closer affair, in which Tranfield had to fight back from 2-1 down to overcome compatriot and fellow Yorkshire player Janie Thacker 6-9, 9-6, 9-10, 9-4, 9-7. It will be Atkinson and Tranfield's first appearance in a WISPA World Tour final this year, with Tranfield - undefeated in a Tour final since 1997 - following three title wins in 2000, and world No11 Atkinson seeking only her second ever WISPA success.
